It was a great experience and very encouraging of the growing youth art scene in Revelstoke.

I worked on a Vans shoe for the show; materials used were polyfilla, acrylic paint, wire, pebbles, sponge scourers, rope ends and acrylic varnish.

It’s been a long winter with a lot of snow and great skiing, which, while it may not excuse my lack of updates on this blog, certainly explains it.

I’ve been working solidly over the past four months for a variety of clients. While much of the work is still confidential at this point, I’ve had some fun designing a number of posters for some events over the winter.

Ourhabit, run by Joey Norsworthy, has organised and sponsored a series of three rail jams in town at the Big Eddy Pub during the last three months. I’ve produced the posters for the jams, as well as a poster for a charity event organised by Brittany Clark, supporting breast cancer awareness and research. You can check out the posters below. They were an interesting exercise in cramming in as much essential information as I was instructed to fit (apart from the video premier poster), while still maintaining readability and making the final product eye-catching.

You can view the posters in my portfolio or read on to check them out.

It was fun developing a theme for his business, and I look forward to hearing his promo mixes. I’ve included a few images from the project below, including some unused concepts.

Identity

The logo for DJ Submeg

The form of the logo is based on the four pillars of Hip-hop culture: MCing, DJing b-boying and graffiti writing. The form is of a vinyl record synonymous with turntablism separated into four segments to represent each of these pillars, as well as to create a stylised S and M when rotated a few degrees in either direction. The G in Submeg is stylised as an arrow to create further mental associations with turntablism and graffiti writing.

After four weeks of planning, V and I finally caught the weather and aligned days off to go and do the Grouse Grind and see Grouse Mountain before summer gasped its last breath.

It was a gorgeous day, and I managed to get a few nice photographs. Apparently I was too shaken up to hold my camera steady during most of the Grind itself, but the photos from the top are worth a look. I’ve tried a few more HDR shots, but the technique’s still a work in progress. Getting the exposure balance right on busy photos is something I’ve yet to figure out.

I received a pair of the skis the other day (from TJ himself, no less) and I’ve taken a few photos because – I’ll be honest here – I’m really proud.

I hope you like how the skis have turned out, let me know your thoughts! They’re still wrapped in plastic in the photos because I’m trying to cosmetically preserve them for the start of winter. The bumpy texture on the close-up photos isn’t actually on the topsheets, just the wrapping.

I recently contributed a skateboard deck to PipeUp, an international skateboard exhibition in Adelaide curated by Lisa King of Paperhorse Studios in Rundle Mall.

I wanted to do something a little different, so I investigated the options for laser-etching the base of the deck. I found KP Sales in Thebarton, a sign-making business, who were able to etch the deck for a reasonable fee. Since the deck is concave, their machine didn’t work perfectly, but the deck ended up with a smooth gradient due to the distance between the wood and the laser.

I think it adds to the piece, and I’m very happy with how it turned out. I’ve included images of the deck and a couple of pictures from the exhibition below. Check them out and let me know what you think!

I recently completed a logo and business card package and will soon be concluding work on a portfolio website for Elifer Santos, a Vancouver-based filmmaker. Eli is both a friend and a client, and I’m glad I could help him build a secure business identity.

I’ve uploaded a selection of images from the design process of Eli’s logo, including a few sketches, idea generation and a couple of drafts. I’ve also included a preview of Elifer’s website that will be online soon. Thanks to both Shelby White and David Airey for inspiring this post.

Sketching

Drafting

Some drafts of the final logo after the direction had been finalised

I was playing with the idea of a ‘signature’ style logo with a much looser appearance – a couple of the explorations I did of this are shown above.

Strong influence from the Georgia typeface – still a little adjustment to do on the logo

Finals

The final logo after minor adjustments

The logo attached to Eli’s name

The logo on a dark background

The tail of the S runs into the middle curve on the logo when it is placed on dark backgrounds, so I also supplied Eli with a slightly adjusted version for this purpose to maintain the integrity of the mark.

I was walking around downtown with a friend who was passing through Vancouver from Australia on his way to study on the East Coast. We had an hour to kill, so we decided to head to the Vancouver Art Gallery. Unfortunately, entry was rather expensive at $19.50, so instead we decided to browse the gift shop, which is essentially a smaller-scale, more commercial version of the gallery. I found a beautiful native print which I sent home as a gift, but I also came across a book of 24 detachable postcards by an artist called Brian Jungen.

Jungen is an artist from Fort St. John, BC and specialises in found art. The work featured on the postcards is from his Prototype for New Understanding series; basing the forms of his creations on Pacific North-West aboriginal masks, Jungen has repurposed Nike Air Jordans into incredibly striking works which combine traditional artforms and commercial products to create a compelling dichotomy. The shapes and colours he uses are distinctly aboriginal, but the Nike swooshes and jumping Jordan silhouettes which intermittently dot the pieces are unmistakeable markers of the origins of the material.

Jungen has also used hanging black human hair in a number of these sculptures, which give them an eery life of their own. As soon as I picked up the book I knew I was going to be buying it; I’m not sure I’m going to send any of the postcards though, they’re too beautiful! I’ve featured a selection of his pieces below.
